[January 20, 2020] | During the busy days when we are in session at the Georgia Capitol in Atlanta, young people from across our state have the opportunity to come to the Capitol and be a ?Page for the Day.? It is an opportunity be a part of the legislative process. Pages deliver messages, letters, and legislative documents during their time on the Floor. You get to visit your Legislators and listen to debate and see the work of the State first hand. I hope that any student interested in government or learning more about the legislative process will apply for this exciting program. I always look forward to meeting students from our district and watching as they become part of the House of Representatives for a day.
It is a busy day, and you will learn a lot. The Page must be at the Capitol at 9 am. Sorry it?s so early, but the Page has to be at the Capitol in time for the orientation meeting (so parents have to commit to this early day as well!). Our schedule is somewhat unpredictable, as the legislators sometimes meet for a few hours in the morning and sometimes continue meeting late into the evening. Students sixth grade and above are encouraged to take part in this program. You do have the flexibility to leave when you need to. We always have lunch for our Pages if the session goes after lunch, and they even get paid. We will make a picture with Speaker Ralston for a memento of your work that day. In case you are interested, you get counted ?Present? at school, just like a field trip, so as not to ruin your perfect attendance.
I know my own children and many others have enjoyed going to the Capitol to Page for David Ralston, Garland Pinholster, Chip Pearson, Steve Stancil, Tom Graves, Bill Stephens, Bud Pickett and others when they were our Senators and Representatives.
Each year I receive a limited number of Page slots which I fill on a first come, first serve basis. If you are interested, call my Capitol office at (404) 656- 7153 and we will send you forms to fill out and return to our office. We would love to have you take part in our State?s government.
